Midterms Examination in Citizen and Community Journalism
Differentiate citizen journalism and community journalism in only 6-10 sentences.
Citizen journalism–based on its name, citizens are the one reporting or the sources of the events or happening. Citizen journalists usually post their news in social media in order to spread the information. While community journalism is a specific type of journalism or reporting of professional journalists that focuses on small, geographical areas in order to inform what is currently happening in the area. These two types of journalism can be very similar to each other because it focuses more on the citizens and to amplify the voices of the people but in some ways, these two are very different from each other.
A significant difference would be the one who is reporting the news, and how it is being reported. In citizen journalism, it is the citizens or nonjournalist who reports through social media like X (Twitter) or Facebook. It is the first-hand experience of the citizen (nonjournalist) of the event. Usually, the topics in citizen journalism are natural disasters and accidents. As for community journalism, professional journalists immerse themselves in the community in order to find and understand what are the core problems or issues within the said community. In this type of journalism, thorough background research and enough time is needed in understanding the issues faced by the community or neighborhood.
Choose a unique local issue which you think can be resolved by community journalism and why? Explain in 6-10 sentences.
One of the issues that I think can be resolved by community journalism is the problem of curfew of the teenagers in a community. Teenagers violating curfews implemented by the officials is still a problem in most communities. This could be a root cause of other problems like teenage pregnancy, missing cases of teenagers, gang fights, vandalism, and etc. With community journalism, professionals and officials can be aware of the said issue in the community. With research and enough information from the subjects like teenagers or the parents of the teenagers, professional journalists can engage themselves with teenagers in a community to understand what are the underlying situations in the area that could only be observed by the people of the said community. By observing and immersing themselves in the area and to the subjects, journalists can report or publish the news with enough information that can help the local officials find a solution to the curfew problems among the teenagers so that they could address it properly.
