Midterm Examination in Citizen and Community Journalism | Lia Vite

Question #1: In your own words, differentiate citizen journalism and community journalism in 6 to 10 sentences.

This writing was intended to differentiate citizen journalism and community journalism to fully understand its meaning. To my understanding, citizen journalism are the people who are not professional journalist or more likely are the individuals who have participated and responded to the given information and social issues. They used social media platforms to gather and report the information that can be the source for public needs, where at times, for public interests.

On the other hand, community journalism is a professional journalist that has an important and critical role that collects and informs the public as well. Its focus is not just to cover the facts of an issue, but to dig deeper to provide and report beyond the truth for what is the need of the people in the community. They are also responsible to inform the residents regarding the happenings and issues inside the barangays, cities, and towns.

Question # 2: In 6 to 10 sentences, choose a unique local issue that you think can be resolved through community journalism and explain why in your own words.

Local communities have different challenges and issues that need to be addressed in order to achieve their goals for the people living in the community. Based on what I observed, one of the issues that are currently occurring nowadays is social inequalities. Many individuals may experience unequal distributions of wealth, treatment, opportunities, as well as unequal rights inside and even outside of their community.

Since community journalists have a vital role in providing and informing the residents of the community, they should know how to work professionally and ethically to be able to inform and to help the individuals. The information must be reported promptly with facts and evidence, and performs fact-checking to lessen and disseminate fake information. Through investigating and reporting, journalists should also be the one who can broadcast the information and issues that can serve as an awareness and eye-opener for the residents in local communities.
