Citizen and Community Journalism - Midterm Examination │ Kent Cedric Ramos

 1. Differentiate citizen journalism and community journalism in only 6-10 sentences. no need to cite references and it has to be originally written by you.

To communicate and connect to communities are both the objectives of citizen and community journalism.

However, in citizen journalism, public citizens play a role in the process of collecting, creating, and distributing news and information. While community journalism is practiced by professional journalists.

When a citizen journalist has a strong feeling or opinion toward a subject or a circumstance they might start creating their own blog. With this example, citizen journalism could be heavily inaccurate, opinionated, and subjective which can result in harm and other potential dangers that can cause riots or panic.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, community journalism which is practiced by professional journalists is objective and follows journalistic ethics making it accurate and unbiased. It serves as a trusted or credible source of information. From the word or term itself “community” it advocates for its critical role in building bridges between the people and events that fosters community engagement, promotes transparency, and empowers individuals to make informed decisions.

Community journalism utilizes newspapers, radio or online platforms, while citizen journalism uses online platforms such as blogs or websites. Both manners or approach may reach hundreds, thousands or even millions of people.

While it is true that citizen and community journalism have the same objectives like what was mentioned before, it is important that we bring attention to their differences to create and maintain a society that is more critical than ever.

2. Choose a unique local issue which you think can be resolved by community journalism and why.  explain in 6-10 sentences. no need to cite references and it has to be originally written by you.

As the summer began, we cannot hide that it is not easy to go to school and learn while you are sweating due to the hotness of the rooms.

In fact, many schools canceled the face-to-face classes due to the scorching heat. But what is the reason for that? It is lack of trees due to deforestation and global warming.

Many environmental activists fought for how many years we will suffer if we cut the trees that give us oxygen and shed. Now the question is, what is the role of community journalism?

Community journalism will serve as the voice of the masses and activists for their call to preserve our trees. Journalists will utilize social media platforms, blogs, newspapers, and other news outlets to give more in-depth information about the effects of deforestation and global warming. They can also advocate for change while still backing up their stance with the right information.

While the government is the one to blame due to its lack of focus on the environment, community journalists can be the watchdog so the government will be held accountable and create more laws to avoid much impact on our health and our environment.
