Citizen and Community Journalism Midterm Examination | Lhyca Mariehl Santiago
1. In your own words, differentiate citizen journalism to community journalism.
- For me, citizen journalism involves discovering one's surroundings or community and reporting or providing information to the general public. It can make citizens aware of various situations. However, as a community journalist, you do more than just gather information from them; you also make them feel sympathetic. Every house, place, compound, or even a community has a unique story that the governments have yet to hear, so community journalists are very valuable because their grievances about what they are going through can be seen by governments. And, for me, you're not doing it just out of obligation or to get news; you'll get back to them if the government takes any action. Community journalists can reach those whose lives are in dire straits if we really focus on it, because it's not just for our news, but to make the government they belong to aware that they need to take action for each person. That's why citizen journalists and community journalists are also important so that the government is aware of their community not just the people they see nearby and can help immediately.
2. Choose a unique local issues, which you think can resolve thru community Journalism and why.
- I believe the best example here is that it is not unique, but it is uncommon in a community. Our barangay has a fishport where you can hang out and fishing at any time. In that fishport, there is a bottom where dogs caught in the middle of the road are kept. A community journalist can address this issue by interviewing dog owners who have had their dogs caught and placed under the fishport, as well as barangay officials can be interviewed. As a community journalist, you have the opportunity to educate people by assisting in the maintenance of healthy dog shelters rather than simply placing them somewhere and let them die. We can also bring it up with the government, as animals have the right to live freely. There are numerous solutions that we can implement to ensure that when they are caught, they are not simply placed under the fishport and left to die due to mosquitoes and the heat.
