Citizen and Community Journalism ┃ Midterm Examination

  1. In 6 to 10 sentences, differentiate citizen journalism and community journalism in your own words.

Citizen journalism is one of the many forms of journalism. Done by ordinary citizens, citizen journalism has the same function as traditional journalism, except it lacks the professional training done by journalists. Citizen journalism does not also have a specialized field on where they would create news unlike professional journalism where there is a field especially assigned to you.

Community journalism on the other hand, is a type of journalism mostly done by professionals. Contents produced through community journalism tend to focus, as the name implies, on a community and what is happening there. Community journalism can also be a great help for the community as it brings out different issues that need to be solved in order for the people accordingly.

  1. In 6 to 10 sentences, choose a unique local issue that you think can be resolved through community journalism and explain why in your own words.

Living near a sawmill factory, the smell of burning woods is not something new to me. However, burning woods is also not something that should be done in a populated area as it poses the risk of different illnesses such as cough, asthma, and other respiratory problems. Many in my barangay have also experienced the same problem and yet it still occurs occasionally. I believe that one of the few ways to solve the problem is through community journalism. Through community journalism, informing people about the risks brought by the burning of woods in the sawmill can be done. Being informed about a problem is a necessary step for it to be resolve. With enough people, solving a problem can be a lot easier. However, the owner's and the LGU's cooperation on the said issue is also necessary in order to provide solution. If both parties negotiated and agreed about a certain solution, then it's best to do that as it both helps not only the people, but also the environment.
