Citizens’ Concerns on Railway Relocation in Borneo, Calumpit, Answered by Barangay Officials

Amidst a flurry of interviews on citizens affected by the
North-South Commuter Railway in Borneo, Calumpit came concerns from said citizens. From a lack of updates on financial support, to shaky details on relocation, the people of Borneo felt as if they didn’t have a voice to speak their concerns and needed clarification from barangay officials.

With these concerns in mind, we decided to visit the Barangay Hall of Pio Cruzcosa where we got the chance to speak with their barangay Captain Jericho Christian “JCL” Lubaton, along with his secretary, Kons Mide Cruz.

Upon raising the concerns of the civilians, the question which sparked the most conversation was “where are the citizens going to be relocated?” to which Captain JCL answered by saying that they are to be relocated in Northville. Secretary Kons then added that the relocation has already been ongoing for years.

The question was then followed up by how much they would pay for those who owned private properties, to which they responded that the price varies depending on the value of the property. It was then revealed that almost 100 to 150 families have already been relocated.

When questioned about how close the rails are on hitting Pio Cruzcosa, they said that it’s close, and it would definitely be this year being that this is the only barangay left not hit by the rails. It is estimated that owners of private property about to be hit are expected to be paid by September to October this year, and that no construction would be made around said private properties without the owners being compensated for.

With all things said, this interview gave assurance to those affected by the rails that they will receive support, and that the relocations are ongoing, and have been ongoing. Currently, there is not an answer to whether or not the barangay officials would stay true to their promises. However, what can be done is observation, being that barangay officials are public figures, they can be watched, and through watching them and their actions can we assure that they will stay true to their word.
